Imagery Conditioning

Here is a wonderful video that explains how to condition yourself for success using imagery.

HERE IS SOME MORE TO HELP YOU

PRINCIPLES

1. Whenever you think to yourself “I should like to, but I can’t......”, you may wish as much as you like, but the harder you try, the less you will be able to do it. (For example, stopping blushing or trying to go to sleep.)

2. Whenever a thought is attached or enveloped by a strong emotion there is a greater likelihood that it will be realised. (For example, stage fright or examination nerves.)

3. When a possible outcome has been vividly, strongly and realistically imagined the mind will automatically find the means for its realisation. (For example, imagining that your speech has concluded and the audience are full of applause.)

EXERCISE

1. Choose a forthcoming presentation, interview, appraisal meeting or any other ‘performance’ situation.

2. In your imagination take yourself to the end point, to its positive conclusion, where you have achieved your goal. Imagine the evidence for this in terms of the responses of all those present. Use vivid imagery.

3. Wrap the imagined experience in strong emotion. Feel the rightful pride, pleasure, and positive affect.

4. Assume this to be true. Imagine you are there NOW, as completely as you can.

IMPORTANT

• Do not reach into your imagination and conjure up imagery about the performance situation itself. That is called ‘rehearsal’, which is an entirely different approach.

• Practice this imagery technique every day, ideally in a relaxed state, beginning 21 days before the event itself.

• Do not attempt to use effort or willpower to bring about the desired result, for trying too hard can create reversed effects. This approach it is based upon imagery conditioning, which yields self-fulfilling, automatic effects based upon the teleological nature of the mind.

• Ensure that the end state is: ▪ Clear and specific. ▪ Within your capability. ▪ Well-practised. ▪ Supported by strong motivation.
