AN EXAMPLE APPLICATION OF THE PJI -

Fostering and Adoption

The attached Fostering Participation and Inclusion Interview Guide is shared here as a historical document from our archive. It was written to support the selection, recruitment and development of foster carers, with a particular emphasis on improving children’s participation in decisions that affect their lives and strengthening carers’ reflective practice. It sets out a structured approach for using the Parenting Judgement Indicator (PJI) to generate purposeful interview questions and development conversations that focus on how carers use power, negotiate boundaries, and build day-to-day inclusion in family life.

At the heart of the Guide is the PJI’s decision-making model (Directive, Consultative, Participative, Delegative) and the idea that effective carers can flex their approach to suit the child and the situation. The document explains the rationale, principles and skills that underpin this approach, and provides worked examples, interview frameworks and printable materials aimed at making the process practical for fostering contexts. Although the PJI in this professionally administered form is not currently available for online delivery, the Guide remains a useful statement of the underlying thinking and, perhaps, a prompt for future revival by others who may wish to take the work forward.
